After pains

Under hormonal stimulation, especially in response to breast feeding, the uterus continues to contract until gradually returning to its non-pregnant size. This is painless to some but can cause labour like pains in some women. This is especially common in the second and subsequent labours.

Suggested remedies:

Nux vomica 30c

  • Pains associated with frequent urging to empty the bladder or rectum
  • Impatient
  • Angry when asked a question
  • Critical of nurses, hospital or partner
  • Intolerant of pain

  • If part of the placenta has been retained

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Sensitive to cold
  • Nervous with rapid changes of mood
  • Fretful and fearsome
  • A lot of bleeding after fast labour

 

Sepia 30c

  • Heaviness or bearing down sensation of the uterus, feels as if everything is going to fall out
  • Retained placenta
  • Violent, stitching pains felt up in the vagina
  • Sense of hopelessness
  • Indifference to those they love most
  • Fear of not coping and losing control
  • Tearful, irritable, worn out and indifferent

Cimicifuga 30c

  • Irregular, sharp, cramping pain
  • Pains like electric shocks- darting, shooting and changeable
  • After pains shoot up and down on the front of the thighs
  • Cramping pains in muscles that are constantly changing
  • Often felt in the small of the back around to the abdomen
  • Mentally, a feeling of dejection, a pessimistic outlook about parenting

China 30c

  • After pains with excessive bleeding of dark clotted blood
  • Dehydration from loss of blood
  • Chills
  • Faintness
  • Thirst
  • Sensitive to touch and noise
  • Ringing in the ears

  • Wants to be fanned

Post-partum infections

Suggested dosage: Give one dose every 15 minutes for one hour, then every hour for three doses and then three times a day until symptoms are gone.

Injuries to the back and spine

During labour, the coccyx or tailbone can easily become bruised or displaced. This can cause severe and long lasting pain. This is most often a problem following a forceps delivery or epidural.

Dosage: Use the appropriate remedy three times a day until pain is alleviated.
